Finding the Right Bob Hairstyle

Which Bob Hairstyle is Right for You?

A bob is any haircut wherein your hair is the same length. The exact origin of the bob cut hairstyle may be unknown, but it is believed that women from Ancient Greece wore this hairstyle, which is seen in pictures of women’s hair with the same shape as the bob. In the 1920s, this hairstyle regained its popularity after the iconic ballroom dancer Irene Castle, who wore her hair in a bob for ten years, before the “flapper look” even became popular.

Today, the bob cut hairstyles have made a comeback with a modern look, thanks to technologies in hair color and other hair techniques. If you’re looking for a new look, a short bob cut can be a good option. These kinds of haircuts are easy to maintain, dry quickly and don’t get tangled easily. Short bobs also make you look younger and provide a trendy look to most face shapes.

The only rule to sporting a bob haircut is to choose a type that would suit your personality and face of shape. Round-shaped faces should oft for an angled cut, while thin faces are better off with an even bob. However, be aware that when you go to a salon and ask for a bob cut, the hairstylist may not create the bob on your mind. This is because bobs come in different variations, so the hairstyle you have in mind may not be the one your hairstylist makes. To prevent this simple misunderstanding, here are the types of bob cut hairstyles:

1. Inverted bob hairstyle – Also known as the traditional bob cut, an inverted bob is worn tapered around the chin line. It could range from short to medium length, but should always add height at the crown and the backside should be more tapered. It could be curved in or out, scrunched in layers of curls or cut with asymmetrical layers.

2. A-line bob hairstyle – As its name suggest, the a-line bob got its name from the shape it makes on a person’s face. It is probably the most common bob cut, particularly after Victoria Beckam’s bob cut made it into a global trend. It is done by leaving slightly longer hair in front, which is cut in an asymmetrical style and may come in many variations, such as the buzzcut bob. The a-line bob hairstyle can also come in varying lengths and is often worn with soft, straight bangs.

3. Layered bob – To achieve this type of hairstyle, each lock is cut a few centimeters longer than the one above it. It combines the look of a bob with the elegance of traditional layers.

4. Chinese bob – This bob haircut is created by cutting at the neck line and bobbed up around the edge. Charlize Theron’s character in the movie “Aeon Flux” wears a variation of the Chinese bob with longer locks in front and shorter around the neckline.

5. Pageboy bob – A style popular throughout the 50s and 60s, this haircut is named after the haircut of English page boys. It is done with straight hair hanging below the ear, where it usually turns under. It is often created with bangs. Popular characters with a pageboy bob include Johnny Depp in the 2005 film “Willy Wonka” and Uma Thurman in the cult classic “Pulp Fiction.”

6. Curly bob - is like any other bobs, but instead of straight locks falling around the face, the ends are curled to extend outwards. Be aware that bob haircuts come in different names, so if you’re planning to get this style done, it is recommended that you bring a picture of celebrities with bob hair for the stylist to have an idea of what you really like.
